Greetings all:

There are links below about a community centre under construction in northwest Alberta. The organizers envision the centre as a social and cultural focal point for residents of the surrounding villages and farms to gather for all manner of events. 

A week of wet weather has delayed the pouring of the floor and consequently stalled the bale raising. Most of the work to date has been done by local volunteers, with a sizeable group of trades men and women returning home to help at a fraction of their normal wages.

The timber frame is made of local beatle killed pine and the straw is from the farms around the town of Demmitt. Yes, Demmitt, Alberta.

  Attached are images from this past Friday's timber raising in Demmitt as well as an article in the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune.  Our sustainable community centre, the only one we know of in rural Alberta, has definitely taken shape.  This month we will be putting up the straw bale walls.  Watch your inbox for dates.  If you have some spare time to help, we can use the extra hands.

  The project is expected to be completed by next spring.

  The Demmitt Community Centre promises to be a destination for live performing arts in the Peace region of Alberta and BC.   In the last three years we have hosted four Juno award winning acts and hosted live jazz and fringe theater in our tiny community.  Our goal is to shatter all expectations of what life in rural communities could be.
