One more note about the historic bale buildings in Nebraska. I plan to
visit as many of the existing bale homes as possible during 2009. Some of
these visits will be as part of tours that I am organizing so people can
visit bale buildings - new and old - along with other sites where
alternatives (salvaged and indigenous materials, renewable energy and so on)
are being or have been used.

*	The Sturtz ranch house near Stapleton is being renovation as the
daughters plan to start a B&B there.
*	I've written for permission to visit the two buildings on the Fawn
Lake ranch, now owned by Ted Turner.
*	The house on the Boys Ranch near Alliance is apparently in pretty
good condition and is presently occupied.
*	The Burke ranch house also near Alliance may be deteriorating
rapidly since Mr. Burke's death - I hope to go there to check.
*	The Martin-Monhart house seems to have been renovated - I'm
contacting the family for details of why.
*	The Pilgrim Holiness Church is now under the care of the local
county historical society since the death of Ted Frye several years ago. I
plan to meet with the society's officers during a visit there this year.
*	The house on the Simonton ranch near Purdum that once had bale walls
no longer has bale walls and is covered with asbestos siding. The Simonton
sons have both died and the land may now be rented out.
*	The building west of Lincoln is unoccupied but has been restored,
although not historically correct as concrete blocks were used to repair
damaged corners. I am trying to reach the owners to find out the status of
this building.
*	The garage with loft near Gordon which I visited a couple of years
ago is in good condition but could use a new coat of stucco. I'm hoping the
owners will let me arrange a workshop next year.
*	I will be arranging a visit to a bale house on a ranch near Ashby
that I was told about a while back.
*	And I'm told there is a bale house near Lewellen - and will make a
stop there to have a look-see. Some reports of bale houses don't always
prove to be true - right David E.? After the Nebraska SB conference in 2000
at Halsey, David and I drove to see a house nearby that a woman told us had
bale walls. It didn't.

I have been and am trying to work with all of the owners to keep these
buildings in good condition, and am trying to find funding to restore and/or
renovate those that the owners are willing to have preserved. Some of the
buildings have changed hands within the families or through sales, so I am
trying to re-establish contacts or make connections with new owners. Am
working with the Nebraska State Historical Society, local historical
societies, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

I'll keep you posted as things progress throughout the coming year.

Hello everyone,

Does anybody know how the Scott home in Gordon, Nebraska is doing? Is
anybody still living in it? Last I heard Lois Scott was living in it but I
think I read that she passed away August 1996, I might be mistaken. Is the
home still in the family? I would love to hear any recent update.

Thanks,
Mark
