G ' day All

Have to agree with the answer supplied by Chris to the question poised by
Joyce.

We are also working on tilt-up straw panels and start our first contracted
tilt-up in January.  Albeit internal walls only, the external walls will be
standard straw bales.

Our panels will be made to order for this client and they will be 150mm or
6" thick.  Made from standard bales and will be around 2.7m x 1.2m or
9'x4'.  The finish will be gyprock (sheetrock) or render lime plaster.

What I have found is that the professionals, (architects, builders and
developers), do not want such thick walls.  Takes up too much of a foot
print with a finished wall at 550mm.  We like Chris feel that main stream
builders will not adopt straw bale building in the manner that we know and
love.  They want speed of erection, contemporary finish with contemporary
design which means highly exposed walls in some cases.

Our panels have gone through a series of tests and we still need further
tests now that we have got them down to 150mm thick.  We are using several
different materials for the frame and have not settled on one as yet.  We
have used steel C section, steel U section, LVL beams, cypress pine and so
on.  So far the LVL shows the most promise from a load bearing point of view
and a manufacturing angle as well.

So as we get older how many more years left who knows where this journey
will take us.

All along it is from the climate change point of view that we have been
developing our straw building methods as we all know it is the best thing
since sliced bread.

BTW we can virtually make these panels from 150mm - 450mm before cladding.

The brand name is SITUP or Super Insulated Tilt Up Panel.

I cannot remember how long ago we started this caper or when it was first
published in The Last Straw, however we are now fair dinkum and into
production for a large house next month.  I will keep you posted on our
progress and as always the story will be published to our web site.

Oh! BTW any profits that I make from the SITUPs will go to the AIDS orphans
of Kenya.  The system we use is unpatenable, which pleases me, if we get
copied by main stream, no worries.  If any of you find the idea a good one
then send me some royalties for the children of Africa!
