I am more than a little sceptical of the efficacy of a 100 mm ID
passive supply air inlet for whole-house cooling. I suspect that
we'd be talking more along the lines of something
with at least 10x that in cross-sectional area.
After looking at the venting systems from Down Under (Thanks Lance
and Bohdon for those links), I am getting the picture that a 4"
chimney, at the upper height of the ceiling will do very little in
the way of Summer cooling, without a vent fan. Some cooling, but
not much,

Here's a new question arising from this discussion:

Will the house loose more heat in the winter due to the instalation
of said 4" chimney, (with the Duro Dyne vent closure device closed
for the season), than it would gain benefits in the Summer, while
having the vent devise open, and fresh air flowing?

After all, during the Summer, there are many operable windows in
this 1000 sq. ft. home for fresh air and ventilation. And
overheating is not anticipated as being a common problem in this
climate and this site and this design, as eaves are designed
correctly for summer shading, as well as the home being built due
East of a very large stand of Maple, shading the house after 1:00
PM.
Plus, this is Canada, north central Ontario! We have a total of
three days per year when rural folks wish they had a small air
conditioner. Maybe.

Summer benefits versus Winter deficits of a 4" vent chimney. What
say yea?
