10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:navy'>A couple of years ago I ran a student leadership
workshop with a local community in a rural area of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region
w:st="on">Transkei</st1:country-region></st1:place> on alternate cooking using
solar cookers and oven bags. True to a low tech natural builder approach,
rather than importing material/expensive equipment I took patterns/designs and info
booklets for people and workshopped what could be made locally in the
community.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 color=navy face=Arial><span style='font-size:
10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:navy'> We found most of what we needed for
the solar ovens from the litter we picked up in the environment! We used shiney
chip packets used as the reflective foil, and athen made our own flour paste
glue which we glued to the scraps of cardboard boxes as the base. We formed
these into simple funnel shaped panel heaters and then set our black enamel pot
(not always easy to find) in a clear plastic bag (oven bags would be much
better here) which we tyed up and placed on a braai grid in the middle of the
funnel which is dropped into a bucket. Biggest challenge of the panel heaters
was to find a wind free zone…..so making a wind screen also helps. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region>, Builders
Without Borders would like to recommend these avenues to contribute:<br>

<b><u><span style='font-weight:bold'>Solar Cookers for <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Haiti</st1:country-region>: </span></u></b>One of <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region>'s most
serious problems in the coming months will be access to safe drinking water.
This combined with a serious and growing shortage of fuel has now reached
crisis proportions. With a solar cooker it is possible to pasteurize
several liters of drinking water every day using only the light of the sun. <br>
<br>
Friends of Haiti Organization is working with U.S.-based <a
href="http://www.sunoven.com/international/index.php">Sun Ovens International</a>
to provide the people of <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region>
with solar cookers. Sun Ovens Intl has been operating in <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region> for the
past eleven years. Donations marked (For purchase of Sun Ovens) will be
used only to buy solar cookers that will be distributed in <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region>. On
January 28, 2010 FOHO in partnership with Feed My Starving Children will be
sending a shipping container with 270,000 meals and Sun Ovens to Port au Prince
<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region>.
There is room for additional Sun Ovens to be included with this shipment and
additional shipments are being planned. <b><span style='font-weight:bold'>Contributions
to Friends of <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region>
can only be sent by check.</span></b> (FOHO is a 501C3 nonprofit
organization so all donations will be tax deductable. 100% of the donation will
go directly to sending Sun Ovens to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region> no administrative expenses
will be deducted. FOHO has been working in <st1:country-region w:st="on">Haiti</st1:country-region>
for 45 years and has sent over 1,400 Global Sun Ovens and 12 Villager Sun Ovens
to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region>.)

AFH had been set to send a design team to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region> this month to partner with

Yele <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Haiti</st1:place></st1:country-region>
but have put this on hold until they can get a full assessment of the situation.
AFH is connected with both Yele and AIDG (Appropriate Infrastructure
Development Group) at <<a href="http://www.aidg.org/" eudora=autourl>
http://www.aidg.org/</a>> . AFH is commitmented to supporting both
their efforts in the long term<br>
rebuilding of affected areas. They have launched an appeal for
supplying construction and design professionals and supporting earthquake
resistant housing and community structures, according to Cameron Sinclair,
Executive Director of Architecture for Humanity.<br>
