Nebraska. I plan to visit as many of the existing bale homes as possible
during 2009. Some of these visits will be as part of tours that I am
organizing so people can visit bale buildings – new and old – along with other
sites where alternatives (salvaged and indigenous materials, renewable energy
and so on) are being or have been used. <BR><BR></SPAN></FONT>

<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">The
Sturtz ranch house near Stapleton is being renovation as the daughters plan
to start a B&B there. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">I’ve written for permission to visit the two
buildings on the Fawn Lake ranch, now owned by Ted Turner. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">The
house on the Boys Ranch near Alliance is apparently in pretty good condition
and is presently occupied. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">The
Burke ranch house also near Alliance may be deteriorating rapidly since Mr.
Burke’s death – I hope to go there to check. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">The
Martin-Monhart house seems to have been renovated – I’m contacting the
family for details of why. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">The
Pilgrim Holiness Church is now under the care of the local county historical
society since the death of Ted Frye several years ago. I plan to meet with
the society’s officers during a visit there this year. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">The
house on the Simonton ranch near Purdum that once had bale walls no longer
has bale walls and is covered with asbestos siding. The Simonton sons have
both died and the land may now be rented out. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">The
building west of Lincoln is unoccupied but has been restored, although not
historically correct as concrete blocks were used to repair damaged corners.
I am trying to reach the owners to find out the status of this building.

<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">The
garage with loft near Gordon which I visited a couple of years ago is in
good condition but could use a new coat of stucco. I’m hoping the owners
will let me arrange a workshop next year. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">I
will be arranging a visit to a bale house on a ranch near Ashby that I was
told about a while back. </SPAN></FONT>
<LI><FONT face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">And
I’m told there is a bale house near Lewellen – and will make a stop there to
have a look-see. Some reports of bale houses don’t always prove to be true –
right David E.? After the Nebraska SB conference in 2000 at Halsey, David
and I drove to see a house nearby that a woman told us had bale walls. It
didn’t.<BR></SPAN></FONT></LI></UL><FONT
face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12px"><BR>I have been
and am trying to work with all of the owners to keep these buildings in good
condition, and am trying to find funding to restore and/or renovate those that
the owners are willing to have preserved. Some of the buildings have changed
hands within the families or through sales, so I am trying to re-establish
contacts or make connections with new owners. Am working with the Nebraska
State Historical Society, local historical societies, and the National Trust
for Historic Preservation.<BR><BR>I’ll keep you posted as things progress
