After I re-establish or establish connections with the current owners, I’ll organize a tour of as many of the buildings as owners will let us access. There’s a great deal of distance between the 11 or 12 historic bale buildings in Nebraska, so it won’t be a one-day trip. For example, it’s a day’s drive from Lincoln to the Scott’s house near Gordon in the Sandhills of northernwestern Nebraska – as Matts, Judy, David E and others well know. I’ll keep everyone posted.
I for one would be interested in going on a tour of the old buildings given that I have enough advance warning to arrange my schedule. Please keep me posted with any info on the tour.
One more note about the historic bale buildings in Nebraska. I plan to visit as many of the existing bale homes as possible during 2009. Some of these visits will be as part of tours that I am organizing so people can visit bale buildings – new and old – along with other sites where alternatives (salvaged and indigenous materials, renewable energy and so on) are being or have been used.
I have been and am trying to work with all of the owners to keep these buildings in good condition, and am trying to find funding to restore and/or renovate those that the owners are willing to have preserved. Some of the buildings have changed hands within the families or through sales, so I am trying to re-establish contacts or make connections with new owners. Am working with the Nebraska State Historical Society, local historical societies, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
I’ll keep you posted as things progress throughout the coming year.
Does anybody know how the Scott home in Gordon, Nebraska is doing? Is anybody still living in it? Last I heard Lois Scott was living in it but I think I read that she passed away August 1996, I might be mistaken. Is the home still in the family? I would love to hear any recent update.
