[GSBN] use of ashes in clay plasters and/or floors

I agree with Rob Tom's instinct, that once compressed, a layer of ash  
won' t have much air space to insulate.

But a related material,  that does make sense, is the use of  
charcoal. I've read the Romans used it in their villas. Would make a  
lot of sense for a hypocaust.
